How Is Mediation Different From Counseling For Couples Considering Divorce In Queens?

December 30, 2014 by Marc Jacob

Mediation and couples counseling are completely separate, and possibly opposite, actions.

Couples counseling is a process where couples meet with a therapist or other counselor to examine issues in the relationship and attempt to develop strategies to deal with them and grow the relationship.

Mediation is a structured, non-litigated approach to divorcing, and while a trained mediator may help you and your spouse communicate more effectively, mediation is not a means of fixing a marriage, but of ending it.

Mediation, and the divorce process generally, does sometimes result in the couple reconciling and re-committing to their marriage, but if your goal is to preserve your relationship and remain married with your spouse, mediation is not the way to achieve that.

At Zelenitz, Shapiro & D’Agostino, we talk to a lot of clients who aren’t sure what the next step is for their marriage, and we can help you understand your options when you’re considering divorce.
