How Do I Start A Divorce In Queens

February 16, 2015 by Marc Jacob

When you’ve decided that your marriage can’t be saved, it’s time to consult with an experienced Queens divorce attorney who can ensure that your interests are protected and the ultimate divorce settlement is one that reflects your long term goals and financial health.

Your attorney will advise you on what information you should gather before filing, and what other steps you should (or should not) take ahead of the divorce.

When you’re ready, your attorney will file a Summons or a Summons and Complaint with the Supreme Court of State of New York, which has jurisdiction over divorce.

A process server will be enlisted to serve your spouse with your filing, after which they will have 20 days to respond.

You’ll learn, if you don’t already know, whether or not the divorce will be contested, and if so, which areas in particular are in dispute.

By working with an experienced Queens divorce attorney, you can trust that all elements of your divorce will be handled properly and professionally, and that you’ll end up with a settlement whose implications you fully understand before you sign.

The attorneys at Zelenitz, Shapiro & D’Agostino are experienced negotiators and litigators who can help you get everything you want in your Queens divorce.
